Recovering from Mental Illness Can Feel Impossible

Recovering from mental illness may seem impossible, but you can do it. Here are tips for your first steps in recovery that make the impossible feel probable.

Recovering from mental illness can feel impossible. It seems like an uphill battle, leaving you feeling stuck and overwhelmed. Finding a place to start when recovering from mental illness is a daunting task. I’m here to tell you that by finding and reading this blog you are well on your way toward an "impossible" recovery from mental illness.

Three Ways to Make an Impossible Recovery from Mental Illness Probable

1. Become Aware of and Educated About Mental Illness

Once you are aware that something is wrong and that you may have a mental illness, hearing other people’s stories of success in recovery can be so empowering. You realize that you’re not alone and although it feels difficult and tiring right now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Recovery from mental illness isn't impossible.

Reading and researching can be a double-edged sword because anyone can post anything on the Internet. Make sure that the information you are reading and listening to is a credible source of mental health information.

2. You Must Act on What You Learned

This may seem so simple and straightforward but you’d be surprised at how easy it is to get stuck in the research- and information-gathering phase. This space is safe, you don’t have to talk to anyone and you don’t have to get out of your comfort zone. But not much change is going to happen here.

You must take action to tackle an almost impossible mental illness recovery. The action can certainly be different depending on the person, but I recommend talking to someone who has been in your shoes and experienced what you are going through. They are going to have the best insight, the best recommendations, and the best understanding of how to kickstart your recovery.

3. Find the Right Person to Talk To

Not sure who to talk to? Maybe you don't know anyone who has suffered from something similar. That is what this blog is for and that is why the resources on HealthyPlace are provided. There are thousands of people who have battled mental illness and made an impossible mental health recovery; you’re definitely not alone.

People to talk to could be a therapist, a psychiatrist, a coach, a mentor, a writer, a blogger, anyone you relate to and connect with, anyone who has valuable insight and concrete evidence as to what works. Have faith and believe in yourself, even when recovering from mental illness feels impossible, know that there are people out there living lives full of abundance and beauty and they have been right where you are right now.
