Science Links Generosity to Happiness
A study by Scientific America showed that people who gave away less money had higher levels of cortisol. The body produces cortisol during times of stress and cortisol has been linked to a variety of health problems.
The study in Scientific America named shame as the reason why people who gave less had higher cortisol levels.
I think that fear is often a factor when we choose to be less generous—at least it has in my life. I know from experience that when I let go of the fears that I don’t have enough time, money, or talents to give, I’m free to offer up what I do have to give. I find that letting go extremely exhilarating.
Research also shows that giving back increases your self esteem.
Go from Generosity to Happiness to Gratitude
Giving has a way of reminding me of the things for which I am grateful. When I give my clothes to Goodwill, I am reminded that I am grateful for all of the clothes in my closet. When I volunteer, I feel grateful for the purpose that service provides. When I give money to organizations that I believe in, I feel grateful that I have something to give.
Gratitude can boost your wellbeing. Since gratitude is a number one contributor to happiness, it makes sense that people who are more generous become happier.
Our Happiness and Generosity Connects Us to Others
I don’t feel as happy when I’m isolated. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my solo trips to Target as much as any other mom. But on the whole, I feel happier when I’m connected to others. And giving allows me to feel more connected. There are many benefits of giving back.
So, give more. Regret less. You’ll be happy you did.

People who give more seem to be more happy in life. Stingy folks do seem much more grumpy and bitter. Helping others does help you.
I agree. I really think that giving has a way of creating joy in our lives.
