Self-Harm and Waking Up in a Rut

September 27, 2014 Jennifer Aline Graham

We all have days when the morning alarm sounds like a million knives stabbing us in the ears. Everyone has experienced waking up in the worst of moods and not being able to kick yourself out of the funk. On these days, no matter who tries to talk you into a better state of mind or make you laugh, the gestures remain hopeless and so do you.

Some people are able to find ways to turn their mind around and push on towards positivity. Other people, however, grow angry with themselves and that anger doesn’t help the already frustrating situation. When you begin your day in an unhappy mode, it takes a lot to really switch on the positivity, and for those who self-harm, the only way to switch on that happiness may be by making a self-injury mark on his or her skin.

We all know that self-harm is not the only way to find happiness and, in truth, that ping of pleasure only lasts for so long while the self-harm scars sometimes last forever. Waking up feeling miserable can root from not only mental illness but from uncomforting dreams, stress leftover from the day before or busy thoughts.

By setting up a routine before falling asleep and when you wake up, you will be less likely to wake up unhappy and less likely to turn to self-harm as an answer. If you go to sleep unhappy, chances are that you will wake up in a similar state of mind. The same goes for self-harm: if you harm your body before you go to sleep and the first thing you see when you wake up is the fresh mark, your mind will instantly begin focusing on the act. Whether the focus is because you wish you could have stopped the harm or because you want to add more to it, the fact that you are thinking about self-harm first thing in the morning is not healthy and needs to be changed.

Create a Healthy Nighttime and Morning Routine

We have heard it over and over again that putting yourself on a routine is healthy and helpful when hoping to lead a successful life. By keeping your body and mind on a schedule, it sets a constant that you can follow and grow accustomed to. If you are always scattered all over the place, your mind mimics your actions and that chaos can sometimes lead to unsafe behaviors and thoughts.

Here are some ways to ease your mind, whether it is in the morning or night, so that you can try to maintain a healthy mind throughout the day.

  1. Drink chamomile tea before falling asleep. Chamomile tea can sometimes bring your body into a calm, content state and by sipping some before you sleep, your mind may become less frazzled and more at ease.
  2. Make your alarm your favorite song. Instead of using the same, boring alarm, choose an upbeat song as your morning alarm so you can wake up to a positive beat.
  3. Do some sort of exercise. Try doing some yoga before falling asleep or wake up and take your dog for a walk around the block. Just allowing your body to move can jumpstart your mind and prepare it for the day.
