Overeating And Binge Eating Disorder
When you have binge eating disorder you sometimes might find yourself overeating. There are certain times, such as holidays, celebrations, or events when overeating is part of tradition. But when you have binge eating disorder, you overdoing it is not the same as an average person overeating.
Overeating With Binge Eating Disorder at a Special Event
I was recently invited to a wedding and was so excited to go that I never thought I would be overeating or that the party would impact my binge eating disorder. But weddings, like other special events and holidays, are prime time for overeating, and sometimes, bingeing. When everyone overeats, remaining in control of your eating is going to be rather difficult.
I have to say, I was not at all mentally prepared for the wedding and I did overeat. I've only been to a few weddings in the past and this was my first formal wedding since my gastric sleeve, weight loss surgery. So I once again fell victim to thinking my stomach was an average size when it wasn't.
However, I was able to stop at overeating and it didn't turn into a binge. Not to mention that the awesome DJ was perfect in helping me leave the table and dance for a while instead of continuing to eat.
How Can I Avoid Overeating (And Then Bingeing)?
Everyone has celebrations and special events in their lives and it's important to learn how to handle them without overeating, especially when you have binge eating disorder. Here are some tips to help you prepare yourself:
- Think about the atmosphere you're walking into.
- Think about what feelings you're going to have about the food and beverage that will be present.
- Think about what triggers you to eat and really examine what triggers will be present at the event.
- Talk to your binge eating disorder therapist if you need extra support when dealing with a special event or celebration.
If you examine your feelings and realize that you're not in a good place and wouldn't be able to handle attending this event without overeating or binging, consider staying home. It might not be fun to miss an event, but experiencing a setback with your binge eating disorder and completely overdoing it is going to cause more difficulty in the long rung.
How To Prevent Overeating When you Have Binge Eating Disorder
When you have binge eating disorder, overeating means more than waking up the next morning with a few regrets. It can be a serious setback in your treatment and progress.
- Work with your support system, medical as well as friends and family.
- Be mindful of your eating as well as what works for you and what doesn't.
- And remember that you will always have a new day to start over if something doesn't work for you.
Having an eating disorder is complicated and can make normal life events difficult to face, but it's not impossible and you can still party with friends without overeating.
