Putting One Foot in Front of the Other With Anxiety

December 25, 2014 Greg Weber

We're right in the midst of the holiday season, and lots of people are coping with holiday anxiety. During times like these, sometimes all we can do is hunker down and manage chronic anxiety symptoms by putting one foot in front of the other. During these times, I exist in terms of hours and minutes instead of days. Often, I exist moment by moment, sometimes, breath by breath.

Here's my toolkit for surviving stressful times with anxiety by putting one foot in front of the other. The thing I cling to most is knowing that it will pass. Life flows on, and it carries us with it, whether we believe it will or not.

If we can put one foot in front of the other with anxiety, things always change.

We don't always notice that they're changing, but, sometimes, it's only because we're not paying close enough attention. We can also learn how to practice gratitude during painful times to change our moods for the better.

Another thing I should also mention is how helpful it can be to chase away anxiety with laughter. It doesn't matter what you laugh at. I often laugh at the absurdity of the whole season. I also laugh with friends, and, sometimes, I even laugh at myself -- anything to relieve the tension and bring a little lightness to the situation. Is there anything at all that gives you a chuckle? I recommend you revisit it and have a good laugh. Even a little giggle is better than nothing at all.
