Suicide: Let's Talk About It

HealthyPlace Mental Health Newsletter

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

Suicide: Let's Talk About It

Suicide: Let's talk about itThis week is National Suicide Prevention Week. Suicide is one of those things most people don't talk about, which is ashame because it needs to be discussed openly. We've been doing that all week. Our mental health bloggers have been covering all different aspects of suicide, including sharing their personal stories. On our HealthyPlace Facebook, Twitter and Google+ sites, hundreds of people have been talking about everything from why people commit suicide and what it feels like to survive a suicide attempt to losing a loved one to suicide. I want to invite you visit our blogs and social sites and share your personal experiences and opinions.

Suicide takes the lives of nearly 30,000 Americans every year. If we don't talk about it openly, how can we, as a society, do things / make changes to prevent it?

Bullying and Suicide

Too many adults still see bullying as "just part of being a kid." It is a serious problem that leads to many negative effects for victims, including suicide. Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims.

From Wednesday night's X Factor, this is the impact bullying has on our children.

Please Help The Balanced Mind Foundation

The Balanced Mind Foundation LogoThe Balanced Mind Foundation helps families raising kids and teens with depression and bipolar. They are a great organization. Now they need your help and it just takes a few moments of your time.

You can help them win up to $250K in funding for their support programs by voting on Facebook or voting here (In the Search Charities box, type "The Balanced Mind" (their former name, Child and Adolescent Bipolar, will pop up). This is especially important now because the bad economy has resulted in a reduction in donations. Please vote as many times as you can between now and the September 19 deadline and share this with others on FB and your other social networks. Thank you.
