Leaving an Abusive Relationship and Your Mental Health

HealthyPlace Mental Health Newsletter

Here's what's happening on the HealthyPlace site this week:

Is Leaving an Abusive Relationship the Answer to Mental Health Problems?

Is Leaving an Abusive Relationship the Answer to Mental Health Problems? There's an assumption that once a woman (or man) is out of the abusive relationship, everything is fine. Is that really true, however?

Physical abuse and emotional abuse are powerful weapons which leave lasting scars. A 2010 research study on the subject reveals the impact of physical violence or a controlling relationship lasts beyond the relationship itself. The effects of domestic violence on women includes high levels of depression and anxiety, the study found. Having to continue communicating with their abuser and parent of their children, financial problems and lack of outside support all contributed to increased mental health problems.

Dana understands that. On the HealthyPlace.com Facebook Page, Dana writes:

"The physical, verbal, and sexual abuse from my ex-husband somehow seemed easier to deal with than the myriad of mental health issues I have had in the five years since leaving."

Susan shares:

"There was/is so much "fixing" to do after living in an abusive relationship. Your life just doesn't go back to normal after you leave it. You are never the same."

All this is not meant to suggest that a woman or man should not leave abusive partners, but it's not a magical solution either. Recovery from physical, emotional or sexual abuse is a process that can take years.

Your Thoughts

Today's Question: Have you found that leaving the abusive relationship was the answer to your mental health issues? We invite you to participate by commenting and sharing your feelings, experiences and knowledge on the HealthyPlace Facebook page.
