Self Injury in Males

September 21, 2012 Christie Stewart

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-injury is that only females self-injure. This could not be further from the truth! Males self-injure too, in fact new research suggests it could be far more common than most people think. This video blog will give facts and insight into self-injury in males.

hey. i'm male. herald from the UK but now live in Australia.
i've been SH since aged 6. i'm 42 and still cope that way. it's my immortal technique. i've had councillors, failed anger management, had it up to here with psychologists. my psychiatrist just wants to medicate me.
i have bipolar with ocd and self harm. my face gets it. torso. arms.. hardly. but next best thing- tattoos. or as i like to call them working class jewelry.
from being spat out the womb to where i am now- I've lost 1 wife. 2 kids. my house. money. i self sabotage.
the need to harm never subsides. it's shame that stops me. and people's reaction to my face. i have excuses at the ready before acting on my urges.
i can't see it stopping. my doc says i've been coping this way too long for it to stop.
anybody got any ideas how to stop? please do let me know.

Hi Christie,
Thank you so much for this blog article! I am a male, diagnosed with DID, who self harms. It took three years of therapy before anyone asked me if I self harmed, and I would never have volunteered the information on my own. As you said, self harm is very private, and I think for many men, something that is difficult to talk about. So thank you for bringing the issue into the open! Lets hope many more people can be helped.
