We live in a society that pushes us away from satisfaction. In fact, being satisfied can sometimes be seen as a weakness because there is always more to want. There is always more to which we can strive. But I feel like peace and bliss demand that we have a satisfied mind. I believe that peace and bliss demand that we find satisfaction in having exactly what we need—no more and no less. Having a satisfied mind could be the key to genuine peace.
How to Cultivate a Satisfied Mind
Prayer and Meditation
Many religious traditions have a concept to pray that God will give just what is needed for each day—our daily bread. It can be hard to live with this mindset when bills pile up and deadlines loom. How can enough for today ever truly be enough?
I know from personal experience that I can never achieve a satisfied mind until I reach a stilled mind. I achieve this through meditation and also through prayer. If you don’t know how to meditate you can learn meditation for beginners to get started.
Accept a Satisfied Mind through Gratitude
Once you achieve a satisfied mind how do you keep it? I have one word to answer that—gratitude. Practice gratitude daily. Gratitude can boost your sense of wellbeing. Be thankful for all of the ways that your needs are met and before you know it you will realize that your mind remains satisfied—your cup remains full.
Let Go of the Worries that Keep You Unsatisfied
You may be reading this and think, I can’t live day by day because I have bills hanging over my head. But I would challenge you to set down the worries of tomorrow and allow yourself to be satisfied with today—allow yourself to be satisfied with now.
In the recovery movement, people are told to take things one day at a time. The importance of living one day at a time extends beyond substance abuse recovery.
It took me a while for this concept to click. I’m worried about tomorrow. I’m worried about next week, next month, next year. But as long as I hold on to those worries I will never be at peace—I will never have a satisfied mind.
So what do I do? I let go of those concerns. I meditate. I pray. I take things one day at a time. I ask my higher power to give me exactly what I need for today—nothing more and nothing less. And then I thank you to the universe for the provisions that I have and I enjoy the peace that comes with having a satisfied mind.
