Do I Have A Mental Health Condition and Where Do I Get Help?

Published in Untagged  by Amanda_HP | 23 Mar, 2009Print PDF

One of the most frequent questions I get here on the HealthyPlace Support Network is where do I get help or treatment? It's an important concern because while support and support groups are part of the mental health treatment process, for many, "getting better" also entails seeing a therapist and/or obtaining psychiatric medication.

This Tuesday night (March 24 - 5:30p PT, 7:30 CT, 8:30 ET), they are going to be addressing this issue on the HealthyPlace TV Show which airs live on our website.  I encourage you to watch it because I'm sure they'll have some great information.

But Amanda, My Main Concern is Cost

As you can imagine, many people with mental health concerns don't have a lot of money or insurance to cover the costs of treatment.  So what can you do?

I've been doing a little research on that question and here are some suggestions:

  • Many communities have a local chapter of NAMI or the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance.   Both offer face-to-face support groups as well as information for both patients and family members or caregivers.
  • Of course, there's your county social services and county mental health programs.
  • Check with your local United Way for assistance and programs.
  • Many medical schools have psychiatric residents who are in training and they offer low-cost (according to ability to pay) counseling.  The same goes for graduate programs in psychology or other mental health counseling professions.
  • Many pharmaceutical companies offer discounted and no-cost medications for people in need.  Yes, you have to fill out paperwork and provide proof of your income status.  If you aren't feeling up to the task, ask a family member or friend to help.

We have some excellent information on Mental Illness and Obtaining Treatment on the HealthyPlace website on these topics:

Maybe you have some experience with this and would like to share it with others.  Please post your comments below.

I just moved myself and as always the first place I sign up for is the local county mental health services. I've never moved to any area that didn't have some form of this. I'm lucky that I have medicaid so there is no cost yet for those who don't have that yet most of them do have a fee scale that is reasonable. I've heard many people say that in their area there isn't any place like that close enough to get to and that is really hard. Because of that many of us formed online support groups year ago. Back then there seemed only a handful of us, now thank heaven there are thousands + out here so that almost everyone can find some sort of place to share and receive support of some kind. Lady J
