Zyprexa and Weight Gain

The new "atypical antipsychotics" such as Clozaril, Zyprexa and Risperdal are miracle medications for schizophrenia and the BPD. They are very expensive. Clozaril is dangerous and requires frequent blood tests. They all can cause impressive weight gain, although Zyprexa appears to be the worst. 50-75 pound weight gain in a year is not uncommon. Some gain a significant amount of weight with Risperdal as well, although Zyprexa appears to be the worst. I rarely prescribe these medications except for as needed use during crisis times and/or dysphoria (anxiety, rage, depression and despair) not responding to Haldol or Tegretol.

next: Use of Depakote and Tegretol Together
