QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
My son is 15 years old, and has been diagnosed with ADHD for some time now. In the last 3 years he has been diagnosed as depressed and schizo-affective. He is currently on Ritalin, Prozac and Navane. Just recently he has started self-mutilation. I am worried - could he also have something else or is this part of what could come along with his other diagnoses? No one seems to have the help he needs and I don't know where to go from here.
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
If he is self-mutilating he almost certainly has the BPD (borderline personality disorder). I strongly recommend you find out more about it. If he does have the BPD and he's already on Prozac, the addition of Tegretol could be miraculous for him.
