QUESTION:
I'm BPD and broke. Between spending too much and gambling, I now have to take a second job and I'm feeling pretty hopeless. I've been able to get Medicaid for my meds, but their counselor is a joke and I don't have the $260 for Ziglar's tapes that you recommend. What can I do?
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
First of all I'm pleased that you're on medicine for the BPD. If you have as needed medications like Haldol (haloperidol) they can be taken when you are dysphoric and start to "treat" your bad moods with gambling and binge spending. This can markedly reduce these spending and gambling episodes.
Regarding Zig Ziglar's How to Stay Motivated package, I want to state emphatically that my BPD patients who listen to Zig Ziglar the most do the best. I know of a psychiatrist in Indiana who is also getting great results recommending these tapes for his BPD patients. While some people might take issue with some of his religious concepts, just let them go and pay attention to everything else.
I wonder how you're ever going to get caught up if you don't get the tapes and listen as your dysphoria episodes and impulsive behaviors may continue to put you deeper in a financial hole. Ziglar will show you how to get control of your life and how to get out of your financial hole. Once you've accomplished that you'll be able to pay for a therapist more to your liking.
If you save $10 per week you'll be able to purchase them in 6 months, sooner if you save more. 6 months is going to happen anyway. This is easily accomplishable. Things that can help include walking places instead of driving to save on gas and improve your health. Reduce your cigarette smoking by half or more. Stop drinking alcohol - which makes the BPD worse. Make your own food, especially lunches, rather than buying food at fast food restaurants or convenience stores. It can be done and I promise miracles for you if you will listen over and over again until you have the tapes (or CD's) memorized. (Ziglar.com Store)
