What Can Help My Son With Cyclothymia?
QUESTION:
Dear Dr. Heller,
My 14 year old son was recently diagnosed with this disorder (cyclothymia). He is currently taking Prozac and Adderall 20mg 1x a day, and seems to be doing great. What is the best way for me to help him out when he is having an awful day and is struggling?
Thanks.
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
A mood stabilizer is the best option here. Tegretol, Depakote, lithium and possibly Neurontin or other epilepsy medications might help. Omega 3 fish oils may help as well.
Make sure he doesn't really have the BPD. If he does, Tegretol should have a huge effect with as needed Haldol.
