QUESTION:

Sir, this sucks. Why do I take medicine when my parents caused me being sick? I feel I'll be lots better if they take medicine instead of me. I feel you shouldn't tell us to take pills when we didn't cause borderline.

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

If you have the BPD you have to deal with the symptoms no matter what caused it. The mood swings, anger, rage, self destructive behaviors and other symptoms will likely destroy your life unless they are treated. If your parents are ill and/or caused your disease they might or might not agree to get help. If they got better some of your symptoms may improve but the disease continues. Some day your children may ask the same questions about you if you don't get treated. It's not that you have to take medication, it's that you get to. Until 20 years ago, the BPD was essentially untreatable.
