Schizoid Personality Disorder (No-BPD)

QUESTION:

I have just found out through looking at my medical records that my GP has diagnosed me as having schizoid personality disorder. This was for the purpose of obtaining CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy ) therapy for me (which

has not gone well.) Is there any information available about this condition, especially from the point of view of self help and therapy. I have had quite a lot of person centered counseling which has helped in the past but I find it easy to get stuck with this. I found that the CBT therapy with a psychiatric nurse made me feel very angry as I felt that my therapist did not really understand me, or care very much. On better days, like now, I can see that this may be all part of my problem, but, I'm still not sure.

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

At this time the schizoid PD is felt to be on the spectrum towards schizophrenia, but not schizophrenia. A common example to describe schizoid is "Mr. Spock" from the original Star Trek series.

Neuroleptic medications can be helpful, and I would imagine the newer ones like Risperdal would help and have less risk of long term side effects.

Getting everything diagnosed and treated would help as your other problems make Schizoid worse.
