QUESTION:
I have a 25 year old son that I think is a pathological liar. He lies about everything. He doesn't hold down a job for more than a few months at a time. His step-father and I have always given him a home but we are just about ready to kick him out. I worry constantly that if we were to die who would take care of him.
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
This is always a heartbreaking question. While sometimes medical problems contribute to the problem (and are worth pursuing), pathological lying is generally considered a character disorder. They are very hard to treat. The concept and book "Tough Love" is probably in your best interests.
You also need to take care of yourself. This constant worry will indeed make you ill. Perhaps your son does that also and lies to avoid feeling anxious.
