Is It Me or Not the Right Therapy?

QUESTION:

Actually I'm not sure whether or not I should give a short history of myself each time I write or not. Well, just in case ........ here goes

  1. I have various disorders all balled into a borderline.
  2. I am a cutter that keeps getting worse
  3. I have tried just about everything, drugs, therapy, ECTs, hospitalizations, etc.

And, well after a 2 week stay in the hospital I had to see a therapist within 72 hours of my discharge or my insurance wouldn't pay for the last day in the hospital!

Well, I went, and I admit to not being the perfect patient, she turned me off immediately. Not only was she around 300lbs. (she has her own issues) which for some reason I told this to my husband BEFORE I even met her.

She delved or tried to go back to my infancy, which in my mind was bad enough until she came at me with a rubber band (for my wrist) and a big red magic marker ( to simulate blood, I guess).

She became extremely defensive when I told her that I learned a lot about the disorder on the Internet. Her remark was "apparently not enough" etc.

She said soon after that that OBVIOUSLY I was not either ready for therapy or didn't want it. Is she right? Or is it me?

I don't intend on going back to therapist either way.

My question is, Am I just not letting therapy happen or that maybe I just haven't found the right one?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

Having not been there I really can't comment on what happened during your visit to that therapist.

I've seen many individuals who like you say they've tried "about everything" - but each and every time they haven't been on the right combination. Additionally all the diagnoses must be successfully made and treated.

A great many emotionally secure and caring health care professionals consider the internet a great tool for patients, although occasionally the patient is misinformed.

It may be wise to pursue another opinion from a different therapist.
