QUESTION:

Is a person with Bipolar disorder ever violent with persons close to him or persons no longer close? Is there a tendency to hurt himself or any one else?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

Yes, during a manic episode the person can become psychotic and violent. Tendency is probably not fair, but a significantly increased risk is more accurate. How the individual responds to the mania and psychosis is the key factor, and it's unpredictable.
