How Do You Treat The Combination Of ADHD And BPD?

Bookmark and Share

QUESTION:

How do you treat the combination of ADHD and BPD?

What would be the medical treatment for this combination?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

They are separate conditions requiring individual treatment, just as high blood pressure and diabetes require treatment for each disorder.

My medical BPD treatment approach is to use Prozac (sometimes in combination with Tegretol) to stop the unprovoked mood swings, the chronic anger, emptiness, boredom and rejection sensitivity. I prescribe as needed medications: Haldol 2mg / Tegretol 200mg / Risperdal 3mg as needed for dysphoria (anxiety, rage, depression and despair).

While the pure hyperactive/impulsive type of ADHD can respond in some individuals to Wellbutrin, the main treatment is with psychostimulants. They include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, and others) and dexamphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine).
