How Common Are Sexual Problems with Prozac?

CoQUESTION:

Dr. Heller,

Do you find a large % of patients on Prozac that experience sexual side affects?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

There seem to be two different populations.

One that loses interest, which is usually those patients, particularly those with the BPD, who use sex as stress relief. These individuals lose that need and commonly feel lost sexually. Sex is best when combined with intimacy and trust, which are difficult for those with BPD

The other is a difficulty having orgasms, which appears to affect 25-35%. Ginkgo 120-240mg daily or adding Wellbutrin usually solves this problem for those individuals who need to stay on Prozac.
