How Can I Help My Uncooperative BPD Son?

QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller,

Today, for the first time I have come across a site on the internet where a positive reassuring Dr. Heller provides hope to me (father of 22 year son suspected to be suffering from BPD). My question is: If the patient is not willing to take counseling or see a doctor, how then can he be treated?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

He can't be treated unless he's willing to be helped. The most important things to remember is that the BPD is not his fault - it happened to him. The "trapped, cornered, wounded animal" part of the brain is malfunctioning. With rare exception borderlines know they are suffering, and are relieved to find some help.
