How Can I Be Diagnosed With BPD At 52?
QUESTION:
But I am 52 years old! How the hell can I now be diagnosed as having this awful......disease!!!?
I have in the last six years been told that I have depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Six months ago I had a new doctor who has given me this new title, of which I am not at all impressed. I am trying to take in new information but I am finding it so difficult. I must add that my new psychiatrist is very nice and caring(I hope).
Please--any help would be great.
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
In my practice, it's not unusual for someone to be diagnosed for the first time in their 70's. Although symptoms change somewhat over time, the BPD persists throughout life and starts at puberty. Fortunately the right medications can have a huge impact right away and give you a chance at the kind of life you've wanted. There's a great deal of information in my website's BPD section.
Remember that the BPD is a medical problem that is absolutely NOT your fault. It is also NOT a character disorder. In the strongest terms possible I recommend listening to Zig Ziglar's "How to Stay Motivated" series. It has been my experience that borderlines who listen to Zig Ziglar the most do the best. It is expensive but absolutely priceless. It can be ordered at 1-800-525-9000.
