Do I have BPD or ADHD?

QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller,

I have ADHD combined type. How do I know whether some of my symptoms are from ADHD or if I have BPD? The descriptions of BPD and ADHD describe me almost perfectly.

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

The criteria for each disorder are very distinct and very different. In my experience half of those with BPD also have ADHD, and half of those with adult ADHD also have the BPD.

If you fit criteria for both, they both need to be treated.
