QUESTION:

I've been married to my husband for 5 years. Recently, I had a discussion with him and we agreed that he is probably a high functioning borderline. (although the very next day he recanted) He has been able to have any sexual relationship with me since we married saying that he has something called "Madonna Syndrome". Could this be related to the BPD? We had a very satisfying sexual relationship for a year before we were married. I don't understand???

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

As a direct result of the BPD, no. There's far more going on here than just the BPD. Intimacy fears are likely involved. I recommend counseling for both of you, and if he won't go you need to learn more about yourself and what you want.
