QUESTION:

I was diagnosed in 1985 with Borderline. In January 1999 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I'm currently involve in DBT. My current therapist doesn't see a lot of evidence of BPD. I'm wondering if the medications I'm taking for MS are relaxing me because my thinking has changed. I'm on 100mg Zoloft, I00 mg Amantidine, 25mg Indocin, 150mg Rantidine, and 20mg Copaxone sq. I just feel like I have more emotional control and want to know how and why so I can draw upon this in the event I loose emotional control.

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

Your medications may indeed be helping significantly. The MS may also have changed your perspective somewhat, making less important stressors seem less significant.

It's important to keep your BPD and all other medical problems under control so your immune system can best handle the MS. While the cause of MS remains unclear, stress clearly worsens it.
