BPD and Lamictil
QUESTION:
My fiancée has BPD. She has tried various meds and therapy. I feel her main doctor is using her as a guinea pig. Every time she finds a medication that works there is a side effect that goes with it. Currently she is taking Effexor along with another new drug the doctor is trying called Lamictal. I would like more info on the use of these medications and what the effect on a person with BPD is.
DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:
Effexor helps some borderlines with many symptoms, especially in very high doses. I'm limiting it's use to individuals who also have panic and the generalized anxiety disorder who are intolerant to the usual medications. Side effects have been a problem with Effexor. It's approved for depression and anxiety, and has great effects towards chronic pain.
Lamictil is a seizure medication. I only prescribe it as a last resort medication. It can stop dysphoria spells (anxiety, rage, depression, despair) and psychotic symptoms.
