QUESTION:

I was given a diagnosis of BPD five years ago and my current therapist is treating me with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I'm not sure it's helping. I am high functioning, finishing a master's this year and starting a doctoral program next year. Does EMDR help BPD?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

You asked a few questions...

  1. EMDR may help some individuals in some ways, but it's not an effective treatment for limbic system seizures.
  2. Accept the progress you've made as good, but don't accept it as all you can be. You're obviously bright, so you can take advantage of available information.
