QUESTION:

I have just found out that I am bpd, and my doc gave me Prozac and Tegretol, but I have a sort of intrusive thoughts and other weird feelings like killing people I love and animals I adore, but most of all I feel that my brain, not skull, brain, is bigger on the left side than the right one, so much bigger that stops the light from getting to the right side. Like one is trying to eat the other and the left one is not the healthy one... Should I take antipsychotic now to stop that? which ones you recommend?

DR. HELLER'S ANSWER:

First of all, like everyone else, you need all your diagnoses made and treated.

If the Tegretol level is in the upper third of therapeutic and symptoms persist I like to have the patient take as needed Haldol in low doses. If still not successful I prefer Risperdal. The other atypicals are either too dangerous, require labs regularly, or can cause profound weight gain like Zyprexa. The "dysphoria instruction sheet" I use for my patients is available in the medication section of this website.
