Melissa Roman's skin was yellow, her nails were
chipping off, her hair was falling out. She had migraines and was frequently
fainting. But the 25-year-old Miami woman didn't think anything was
wrong.
"I hit rock bottom," Roman said. "I never thought I was sick, and I was completely in denial."
The fact was that Roman, a recovering anorexic, was actually among a growing number of Hispanic women who are developing eating disorders, which until recently had typically been thought of as a white, suburban problem.
Some health officials say eating disorders started affecting more Hispanic women as the popularity of Latin culture began surging in recent years. Hispanic women are feeling pressure to be thin as they strive to mirror stars who appear to be shrinking as their reputations grow, experts say. And as more are competing in the professional job market, they are also facing workplace discrimination while trying to meet society's standards.
"The dominant culture believes that thinness is beauty and gets you success," said Catherine Shisslak, a professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
Roman, who is trying not to be pressured by such beliefs, is learning to love her body.
But many Hispanic women aren't.
A recent study shows minority women now have many of the same abnormal eating patterns as white females, said Shisslak, the study's principal investigator. The study involving Hispanic, black and white teenagers found that in seventh grade, more Hispanic girls reported the most frequent weight loss attempts over the previous year.
The study, which was presented at the 2002 International Conference on Eating Disorders in Boston, also found that frequent binge eating in seventh grade was highest among Hispanic girls.
Hispanic women were once thought to be immune to these disorders because they had better body images and different cultural expectations than white women, Shisslak said. But with thin Hispanic celebrities like Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez now frequently splashed across magazine covers, their cultural expectations are changing, Shisslak said.
"The more you see Hispanic role models, whether on TV or in movies or from music, emulating a thin body weight, the more you are going to see young girls trying to achieve that," Shisslak said.

Bulimia involves bingeing and purging and often congers the image of a woman consuming huge quantities of food followed by vomiting to eliminate the unwanted calories. But bulimics do not always purge through vomiting. Certain individuals elect to purge through extreme exercise (compulsive exercising). Why and what can happen is the subject of this column.

As many as one in 20 mothers suffer post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth, with many others experiencing symptoms such as nightmares.
The serious anxiety condition is more usually associated with wars and actual or threatened physical violence. Its existence in mothers was often missed or misdiagnosed as post-partum depression by health professionals, according to Stephen Joseph, a psychologist at Warwick University in the UK. More
The world-famous Menninger Clinic has moved to Houston.
Operations were transferred from Kansas on Saturday when 29 patients made the trip by chartered jet. The renowned psychiatric care facility will begin accepting new patients Tuesday.
The clinic, founded in 1925 by Dr. Karl Menninger, his brother and father, is joining a partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine and the Methodist Hospital.
Menninger, a private nonprofit institution, will treat a broader range of diagnoses in adults and adolescents, including eating disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress.
Menninger began as a sanitarium 78 years ago, gaining fame as an intellectual center visited by luminaries such as psychoanalyst Anna Freud, anthropologist Margaret Mead and author Aldous Huxley. It has treated celebrity patients such as Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
In recent decades, the clinic has faced hard times and reported significant operating losses in the 1990s.
