Coming to HealthyPlace.com in 2006

During this last month of the year, all of us at HealthyPlace.com are working really hard to implement some great new tools for 2006.  The first thing we'll have is a new chat system which will work great for everyone (pc and mac users alike). In January, we'll be introducing a new blogging system, for those who want to keep online mental health journals (diaries) at HealthyPlace.com. It's a vast improvement over our current journaling software.

With the launch of our comprehensive update to the Sex Issues Community this month, we received a lot of complimentary emails like this one from Monica:

I'm a sexual abuse survivor. One thing I appreciated about your new Sex Issues community is the "Sex After Sexual Abuse" information. Most sites across the net stop with the problems and pain inflicted upon the victim. I've been through a lot of therapy, and for me, complete healing includes having a sexual relationship I can feel comfortable with.  Thank you for the information."

We're now working on updating the ADHD Community and hope to have that completed in February. Then we'll be moving on the Personality Disorders Community.

Love Spray: Get a Whiff of This

Now entering phase 3 clinical trials, PT-141 may be headed for FDA approval in 2006

Putting that inhaler up your nose and popping off a dose of PT-141 results, in most cases, in a stirring in the loins in as few as fifteen minutes. Women, according to one set of results, feel “genital warmth, tingling and throbbing,” not to mention “a strong desire to have sex.” Among men, who’ve been tested with the drug more extensively - well, here's what one man had to say: “It helped the libido. So you have the urge and the desire. You get this humming feeling; you’re ready to take your pants off and go.” And another: “Twice me and my wife had sex...twice in one night. I came in to work and I just raved about it: ‘Jesus, guys . . . 58 years old and you don’t do that.’" More here.

How About This: A Kiss in '06.

Lot's of them can bring the spark back in your relationship. Here are some other good resolutions to help make 2006 a better year.

8% of Adults Suffered From Major Depression

...in 2005 alone.  That's 17 million people in the U.S. who had at least one episode of the disorder. The good news is nearly 2/3 of those people sought professional treatment for depression. Read more.

Getting to the Bottom of Suicide Risk and Antidepressants

One of the biggest mental health stories of 2005 focused on the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions children and adolescents may experience from taking antidepressant medications.  Dr. David Shaffer, the director of child and adolescent psychology at Columbia University and a leading expert on suicidal behavior, discusses these risks and puts the recent controversy over antidepressants into perspective. Pregnant Mom's Lithium Use Could Effect Unborn Child

Although lithium has been used during pregnancy for more than 40 years, information on its perinatal effects is limited.  Now, a new study shows that a fetus exposed to high concentrations of the mood stablizer could face significant problems.

Earlier this month, the FDA warned doctors and pregnant women that another psychiatric medicine, Paxil, could cause birth defects.

And a new Canadian study shows that Celexa is relatively safe during pregnancy.

Law Enforcement and Mental Illness
The shooting of a bipolar man who threatened to blow up a plane earlier this month at Miami International Airport highlights a difficult issue for law enforcement: How to deal with the mentally ill in a potentially violent situation. Experts on the topic discuss how police and other first responders are learning to better prepare for these scenarios.

The Effects of Diseases, Drugs, and Chemicals on Creative Minds

Many of the world's most talented artists took drugs and/or had psychiatric conditions that could have been diagnosed and treated by today's standards. However, Paul L. Wolf, MD from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, in a recently published article, contends intervention may have dimmed or extinguished the "spark".

From the HealthyPlace.com Relationships Bulletin Board: "This Feels Strange"

kittiecat:

"I just asked my daughter if it would upset her if I were to date another woman. I want to be honest with my kids. My husband told them that I was a lesbian and had been with women, but they know he's an a** so they kinda ignored it, but I was so afraid that when they found out the truth, it would disgust them and they're treating me more like a person than I thought they would. This really, really feels weird." continued here.

Something to think about...

"Never let other people decide your limitations or capabilities. There will always be those who will say you're not smart enough, old enough, young enough, etc. to accomplish your goals. Don't listen."

From all of us here at HealthyPlace.com, we hope you have a good week.
