Chat Conference: Surviving A Parent's Mental Illness

Tina Kotulski’s mother has schizophrenia. She went undiagnosed for 20-years. Tina says: “Mental illness, like any affliction, is a burden not only to those with a diagnosis, but family, friends, daughters and sons, husbands and wives, and medical professionals.”

Tina tells her story in a book entitled Saving Millie: A Daughter's Story of Surviving Her Mother's Schizophrenia.

She'll be addressing the needs of children who have parents with a mental illness, what that’s like, and what can be done to help children, even adult children, who have a parent with a mental illness. And, of course, Tina will be taking your personal questions.

Tuesday, December 5, 2006. The conference will be in our chatroom at 9pm Eastern, 8pm Central, 7pm Mountain and 6pm Pacific. There is no charge to participate.

Psychiatrists Less Frustrated Than Other Specialists

Psychiatrists are more satisfied with their careers than are other medical specialists, a newly published survey suggests.

Among 647 psychiatrists who answered a national LocumTenens.com survey, more than three-fourths (77%) said they would enter medicine if they could choose again. By comparison, 56% of obstetricians/gynecologists, 57% of orthopedic surgeons, 67% of anesthesiologists, 69% of general surgeons, and 70% of pediatricians, internists and radiologists said they would choose a medical career.

Only 9% of psychiatrists said they are not frustrated about practicing in today's health care marketplace. However, fewer anesthesiologists (6%) and surgeons (4%) said they are not frustrated.

Job-related frustrations most commonly cited by psychiatrists include:
• administrative and business agendas interfering with clinical decisions (cited by 33% of psychiatrists)
• reimbursement issues (19%)
• too much time at work (13%).

Interestingly, the survey estimates the average psychiatrist’s salary at $178,000, compared with $250,200 for general surgeons and $309,950 for anesthesiologists.

"May Be Bipolar and Scared"

Castor:

I have no diagnosis at the moment but have just come back from my family doctor who suggested to me that I may have bipolar. Talk about shock! I did not even know it existed until today.

I am currently living on my own due to the breakdown of my marriage due to incidents I think I can now attribute to BP. I have had many bouts of depression over my later teens and throughout my adult life but until recently had just put it down to the strains of life. I suppose things have really hit home since I left my home and my kids.

I was wondering if someone could give me a little insight as to what to expect regarding a diagnosis and what happens from there on in. respond here
