Beating 'Stigma' of
Mental Illness
(December 27, 2007) -- A nationwide television and radio campaign is
beginning, in an attempt to remove the stigma around
mental health.
Ads will run for several weeks highlighting how mental difficulties
should not prevent people from leading a full and active life. The campaign,
run by the National Disability Authority (NDA), was launched after research
showed one fifth of parents would object if their child was taught alongside
a youngster with mental problems.
The ads feature Gaelic Players Association chief Dessie Farrell, who has
battled depression, chess master Paul Leavy, who was diagnosed
schizophrenic aged 17, journalist Carol Hunt, who suffered post natal
depression and anorexic mother-of-two Marie Devine. Ads will also be posted
at bus shelters.
