Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

As a single mom who also suffers from BiPolar Disorder, things were already a bit overwhelming in my household.Add a new baby and another broken relationship and things become a bit more intense. Then, the schoolyear begins and my 5 year old is diagnosed with ODD, ADHD and BiPolar Disorder and things become, well...Surreal.
His Meds are one concern- trying to figure out the perfect time to administer. If I give them to him before school, I have to make sure to couple it with something sugary to keep him from falling asleep but without it, he would be way too hyper to sit in the classroom.
Then there is the issue of ME keeping my cool. His hyperactivity causes me to become aggrivated with him and i know it is not his fault.Coping Mechanisms...i need some!
So anyone with advice, PLEASE reply!

Re: Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

Hi and welcome. I don't have a lot of advice since I don't have children. You sure have a lot in your plate. Have you tried taking therapy with your son, together? Maybe it can help. Also here they have a lot of info about ADHD and Bipolar in kids, I suggest you read the info. Is under communities.

Also it seems like you really need to vent and this is a great place to do that. Hang in there and I hope to hear from you again soon.

Re: Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

I have two children with autism and I have DID - so I understand the living craziness! It is very hard!  My advice to you is to be as organized as possible to cut down on stress that isnt needed.  I would talk to your son at the end of the day so that you can sheck in with him about how things are going.  I would stay in close contact with his teacher so as too see any red flags early on.  If you work with a psych doc you can talk to them about a plan for home - organation for your son - to keep stressors low and predictability high.
I will think on this a bit longer and see what else i can suggest.

Re: Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

Honestly the best thing would be,if you can afford it or find a program that will help you do so, is to get him into a sport he loves. My brother has severe ADHD and we got him into downhil skii racing. It exhausts him and he loves and the days he races he has sometime a minute of complete focus because his mind runs at 60km per hour(thats his average clocked speed)so he sees the gates the same way we'd see them as if we were walking past them. Regardless it is best to get him into a phyisical activity he likes so that his energy gets drained momentarily and he has something to focus on.Even though my brother's sport is a winter one he does things in the summer to help himself train and get better. And surprisingly coffee calms them down..The caffine seems to have the reverse effect on adhd children as it does on a normal person so if you really need to calm him down after school when his medication wears off you could try a small amount of coffee in some milk or something.

Don't count the miles, count the I love You's

Re: Dealing with my 5 year old who has odd, adhd and bipolar disorder

Hi, I just registered so that I could reply to your request for help.  Firstly, you are doing a great job by actually having youand your child diagnosed and starting on meds.  I wanted to reply because my son who is now 12, was finally diagnosed with ODD and ADHD two years ago after years of pain for him and the rest of the family.  What his psychiatrist explained that when you treat the adhd with the right meds, the ODD just goes away.  That is EXACTLY what happened!  The day he started taking Concerta it was like he stepped out of the mean and angry suit of clothes and he hasnt stepped back in them again.  Good luck to you, your son and baby.  You can do this!
