A little advice for ptsd sufferers

A little advice for ptsd sufferers

So lately I have been thinking that at least me, suffering from complex PTSD, my past is what makes me react like I do in the present. I was in danger in my childhood, so I had to make and grow some skills to defend myself of this dangers. So my symptoms were useful in one point of my life. But they are not useful anymore, because I'm not in danger anymore. So I have tried to be grateful that I develop PTSD because it helped me a some point, I needed it. but now I try to understand I don't need it anymore. So whenever I feel the past trauma coming back, like re living it. I try to keep thinking: I'm not in danger anymore, I'm a grown up now and I'm in a safe place now, I'm not in danger anymore. I have found it really helpful. I don't know if it will help others, but I wanted to share, because it has helped me.

Good luck!

This is something my therapist has been trying to tell me for years. Unfortunately I keep finding things to ACTUALLY be afraid of in the present!

Yes it's not easy to look at things like not scaring anymore. I think somethings are still scary, but others were scary because we were kids. So I try to work on that stuff.. like try to think if it it scary now or it is scary because it was in the past... am I making any sense? LOL

Re: A little advice for ptsd sufferers

Maria,
It makes sense to me and I think it's great advice. I already apply it to my panic disorder, but never thought to use it in dealing with my PTSD issues. Those memories are still so scary that I continue to block them. I know deep down that they can't hurt me anymore. I am probably making it worse because instead of dealing with my fears in the daylight in the comfort of my therapist's office, I am stuck dealing with them in my nightmares, where there is no one to tell me it's going to be ok. And then I wake up feeling extremely disturbed, which usually sets me off for the day with my other plethera of disorders.

I think I'm going to try to take baby steps to deal with my PTSD instead of running from it. Thank you!!

Yes I believe baby steps are the key, we all have our own timing  for getting better and it makes no good to rush ourselves. I'm glad you found the post useful. It is scary to confront our traumas, but it's he way to be free of them right? So keep on with your baby steps and celebrate everyone of them. smile

Re: A little advice for ptsd sufferers

your post was so positive and informative.  Baby steps are probably the best way to go - it has taken so long before I could actually accept this - like fighting within myself.  Do you ever go to therapy and not talk - or cant talk - this is what frustrates me soooo much.   Knowing talking is the best thing to do but not been able..   I hope you are in a good place and thanks for your postings - they are full of hope.

Thank you very much for you kind words, I'm glad you enjoy it. And yes sometimes I can't talk, I guess there are some things we are not ready to verbalize. Thanks again for your nice reply.

Sorry for your loss, I hope someone can relate to that and understand you. I have complex ptsd for other reasons.

Re: A little advice for ptsd sufferers

Your posting was so helpful and so true in my case. I get a little upset at times, because I had to become an adult at such a young age (15) and miss out on all the fun stuff that most teenagers go through between 15-19. I was so busy keeping myself safe at that time.  So I have to try hard and realize that it's not like that anymore.  I have a lot of issues dealing with abandonment. That one is very difficult for me.  Thanks for a good post.
