Experimental treatments often take years of research and then years to test the effectiveness and safety of the treatment. One new and promising research is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). (Also called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). In this technique, magnets are briefly put on the head to alter the electrical currents in the part of the brain thought to control mood. This therapy has helped some people with depression with few reported side effects. This is a new technique and will need more studies to determine its efficacy and safety.
