The bad? It's been horrendously
hot. I've been running around in short shorts and a bra most of the weekend
because it's too hot to wear anything else. And I stubbed my toe bad enough to
pull part of the toenail off, so walking around has been a DRAG. For the first
two days I'd step and a little blood would sqoosh out. Gross.
The good?
Well, we made some progress. The
storm closet is pretty, although the living room still has bits of stuff I
pulled out of there and have yet to find homes for. What am I going to do with
a pack of Garfield air fresheners? Exactly how many pens do I own and how come
most of them are dried up? How much guitar music does Paul have?!
We spent the weekend cleaning and
shopping and basically playing house, although it wasn't the fun kind of
playing house but the kind where it's endless chores and rather boring. At
least the animals are settled and the closet it done. I have Laundry Mountain
to tackle though and Clyde is in some kind of hissyfit because we brought her
inside from the iguana cage on the patio and she's sulking about it.
We went to Sam's Club and blew
$200 -- soda and snacks for Paul by the dozens, paper towels, shampoo,
toothpaste, toilet paper, light bulbs, tinfoil, garbage bags, etc. I don't plan
on buying any of that stuff again for a loooong time! We also went to the
regular grocery to get the usual regular things we can't get at Sam's. It's all
well and good to buy dry goods like paper towels in massive quantities, but I
don't fancy having quite that much ketchup or bananas! Paul's got a
steady supply of individually wrapped snack crap, so he's been eating pretty
steadily all weekend. This makes me happy. I don't see how he can work his way
through a garantuan thing of peanuts or cracker thingies like that but whatever
makes him eat makes me happy.
The fun part of the weekend
involved home decor.
I was looking through a whole mess
of 1950's furniture at the bookstore and on ebay just to get a feel for what I
want. Eames, Miller, Knoll, Heywood Wakefiled -- the whole nine yards. I had a
great time flipping through old decorator schemes noting stuff I like (happy
color schemes, knick knacks) and the things that made me want to scream (shaggy
carpet and anything orange.) Paul is amused, but mostly leaving the grunt work
to me. All he wants to do is nod "yes" or "no" because he'd
rather play with his planes. (I've become not a golf widow, but a model kit
widow.)
The first order of business is
definitely the dining room table. The only problem is deciding between chrome
or wood.

I'm leaning toward chrome, but
something like that Heywood set wouldn't be bad either. If you were me, which
would you go for?
The things I like best about it
all are the simple lines and plain styling. It's why I also like mission and
shaker furniture. I don't like things to be complicated. Paul looooooves those
Victorian ornate things, and while I like them to a degree, I don't fancy
cleaning all that crap all the time. I also couldn't deal with wallpaper he'd
want if we did Victorian. So stuffy. Plus, the dark woods make me depressed. I
like things bright and cheery.
I am going to have to refinish the
chinese chests we are using for sofa end tables and move them to the bedroom
for nightstands because they just aren't going to work out in a 1950's living
room. The futon frame is passing and I can always change the futon cover but
the chests we inherited from my folks are just wrong.
As far as accent pieces
and things... Curtains and pillows are going to be easy -- I already have some
fabric swatches in mind and if I can't handle it myself on my great green
beastie I'll take the sewing project over to Mom's house and have her help me
do it. My mommy can make anything -- she's just got done making all the slip
covers and curtains at her house. She'll think I am sick and have no
taste, but she'd help me make the curtains anyway. Laugh.
What I secretly want to find is a
sickeningly cutesy little kidney table for a coffee table in green or blue. Oh,
and Family Dog posters, but then that's a whole other entry.
