Very long, rough day and
if I want to get up early and walk tomorrow I really must just go to sleep.
The mail brought some NF stuff I
asked for -- T-shirt, sweatshirt, singlets (ie: tank tops). Trying to set up
some bookstore displays for NF with them plus NF posters. I have to double
check in the morning with my NF coordinator person and see if I have everything
they were sending me and then after that make some calls to the bookstores so I
can make arrangements to drop them off with pledge sheets and hope we get some
donations from people visiting the bookstores..
(This week Adrith told me she's
was up over $400 ish, so combined we are VERY close to breaking our first grand
in funds raised. Yay! Four thousand more to go!
)
The T- shirt is white with hunter
green lettering and the sweatshirt is the opposite even though this late at
night the colors didn't show up very nicely. Then my camera batteries fritzed
out before I could take a photo of me in a singlet so Adrith could see what
they look like on a person.
Basically the back has this big
"NF' lettering like the sweatshirt and the front over the left breast in
smaller letters is the full logo. We have to wear the singlets during the race
so the NF volunteers can pick us out of the crowd if we get into trouble and
need assistance. This is a good thing -- it's a pretty visible shirt without
being scary or garish. The arm holes are pretty large without revealing sports
bras and they are long so you can tuck without popping out or wear them out and
cover your butt. The only pooper I can see is that they are cotton, and that's
going to get soggy really fast.
Guess hoping for wicking was
hoping for too much, huh? I'm getting really spoiled with wicking fabrics in
this summer heat. The race isn't until January, so maybe by then it won't be
quite so terrible in cotton?
I got an answer to my strength
training question from the walking guide at about.com. I figure she ought to know what
she's talking about since she's the guide for that whole area so here
goes:
Q: If you are
doing a lot of walking (in general or in training for a race), can you get by
with only doing weight training for upper body to compensate?
A: From what I have read from the
racewalking email group and from racewalking manuals, they say there is no need
for a racewalker to do any lower body weight work. However, they do recommend
abdominal exercises, which can help with posture in walking, and some upper
body work just to stay balanced. (from Wendy Bumgardner )
Thank goodness. My legs can't take
more than they already do! I can wait til after the race is over before
bringing back weight training on my legs.
But gadnabbit, I really dislike
ab work! I didn't think I'd be excused from that just because I'm walking a
lot, but man, that would have been a peachy thing to hear! What if I bring a
note from my mom?
Update: 11:46 AM EST
Lunch time! The batteries
recharged overnight so I snapped a quickie of the singlet. See? Big, long,
hunter green tank top thing that completely covered up my running shorts if
left out and untucked. Pretty visible "NF" on the back like the
sweatshirt above.
I don't like it that long.
It's just more material to get wet
and soggy and stick to me on race day. When I get my real one (these are the
ones for the bookstore people) I might get my mom to lop off the bottom and put
in a shorter hem so it's more like my other tank tops that hit just below the
waist.I don't trust my own sewing machine skills -- I still put in cow path
seams.
Paul laughed last night that if I
were shorter this would be like a mini tank dress!
