February 24, 2000 -- 11:41 AM ESTLunch break. Product 19, rice milk, and a banana. Mmmmmm. How exciting! :P Yesterday I had lunch with Holly at this Japanese restaurant we had been wanting to try forever. It was actually pretty affordable on a Denny's kind of scale. We were expecting it to be much more expensive like Yae Sushi or Shiki. I'd definitely do lunch there again -- and I don't even remember the name of the place! I had salad with ginger dressing, and this item which involved rice with a light sauce and this assortment of vegetables: broccoli, zucchini, onion, etc. Sort of stir-fry. Holly, who is low-carbing, opted for one of their "lunchbox" trays. The lunchbox trays are assorted stuff ranging from sushi to tempura to fruit and beyond. Like a variety platter. All arranged into the trays with little compartments. Each one is themed. I don't remember which theme she did, but she said it was doable. Not perfect for low-carbing, but doable. I need to find out how to say "Is this vegan?" and related short phrases in Japanese. The waitress was a bit confused when I asked about the sauce in English. I was trying to ask if it had any chicken or beef broth or any animal-based contents in it. I let it go because she was so frazzled. Some other customer in a party of three was joking with her and she got all messed up with what he was saying and he just laughed and patted her shoulder and said "I am just joking, don't pay attention to me." Poor lady. So I let it go; I could figure it out when I got there. She brought it to me in this big blue bowl that reminded the both of us of a ceramics friend of ours, Carol. After tasting it, I found the sauce was pretty much tamari-based, so I was ok. I didn't detect anything overly bizarre in there, so I just pretended it was vegan. This is what I meant when I say I am mostly vegan. I try.... but then sometimes you just never really know when you eat out... even when you are trying to get details! Anyway, Holly is working on revising her portfolio. (Something I probably ought to do. Blah.) She was also asking me for suggestions with her budgeting. I am still trying to work out our budgeting. We are ok, but I really wish we had more leftover to dedicate to savings. Holly agreed -- she wishes she could put some away in savings but she just can't afford it. We've moved out of the Breakfast Club, we are living our way out of St. Elmo's Fire now. ~Astrophe |
