February 14, 2000 -- 12:59 PM ESTMajor busy today, and I still didn't get everything wanted done. Grr. As for website stuff, redid the index because I needed to look at something new. I also updated my journal list and the about page. General housekeeping. The good stuff? Even though I forgot (again!) to change the batteries in my CD player so I was music-less at the gym? Well, the good part is that the radio music they had on was decent, and I got into my workout so the 45 minutes blew by pretty swift and I was having a good time! Yaaaay! Out of curiosity, I tried the stair climber again. Yup. Still hate it. Too jostly on my joints. It waaay worse than treadmilling to me as far as impact. Yuck. But def. a bonus to not be so vehemently anti-gym anymore! The other good thing? I got DietWatch working on my PC again -- so hurray. Food journaling once again. Gettin' jiggy with it. My FIL called this weekend and when he found out I was making soap, he laughed at me and asked if I wanted a washboard too? Then he was telling me about his mom and grandmother and how they would make lye soap after hog killing time when he was a boy. He explained how they'd boil the fats and make lard, then how his mother would make the soap and put it into this big kettle and then slice it up into blocks when it was done and how'd they'd use that for washing laundry. I didn't used lard, I used vegetable oil. This is vegan soap! Trying to imagine hog-killing time gave me the creeps, but it was a good story anyway. I'm still getting to know my FIL because he lives so far away we don't have more contact liek our local relatives, so these little glimpses of him are kind of cool. Paul tells me Glenn (my FIL) eventually also took his Dad's still apart and hid the pieces all over the woods out there and as far as anyone knows, the pieces are all still out there. Lots of stories about the family. Moonshine, anyone? BTW, the soap is now hard like "normal" soap, but still has to air dry for a few more weeks. This might have been a successful thing after all! I also made vegan chocolate-banana cake (which worked out ok) and whole wheat Boca Burger empanadas (which worked out ok too.) Not totally where I want either of those things, but vegan baking -- I'm getting it! Getting there! So if I don't use milk or egg white, what do you brush onto pastries and breads like empanadas to give it that nice shiny glazed look? Hrm... I need to work out this party type vegan food before I actually have to do or attend any parties... Paul was a doll and cleaned a lot of the house while I lazed and puttered in the kitchen with my own little things. We watched the Janis Joplin movie he bought me for Valentine's day on Saturday night. I don't remember where I read the description of Janis that goes "That girl sang like Bessie Smith was her momma." But it's pretty much there. Sometimes I still think I am a misplaced flower child.
