This afternoon before we
tried to go to the DMV to get our addresses updated on our driver's
licenses we drove over to the Hyatt to pop in at the NCRS show. That's the
National Corvette Restorer's Society annual swap meet. A family friend,
Tyler, is the registrar at the event. He's really into that whole
Corvette thing. Paul and Greg also love the cars, but Greg works helping
out the judges every year with tabulation while Paul quit doing that once
he moved to Orlando because it's a four day commitment to work the meet.
They used to have it at Cypress Gardens, but the moved it to the Hyatt
here in O-town this year so if they stick around with having them here
then Paul might get into it again.
He ogled the '63 Sting Rays
like he does every time we go to a swap meet and I just kind of enjoyed
visiting with friends and oooohing over the big shiny cars I know
absolutely nothing about. Paul yammers out statistics at me and his dreams
of owning a '63 one day if he ever has the money and I nod obediently and
think "Wow! SO much shiny chrome! Wow! That steel grey is a gorgeous
color! Wow! Look at all these people! Wow! What the heck am I looking at?
"
I am car clueless. What do I
know about Corvettes? Or restoring them? Or judging and points? Zilch!
We waved goodbye as Tyler got
his ZR-1 up on the dyno to see what there was too see about his Corvette's
performance. Paul says even though he drives the ZR-1 for a
"regular" car he secretly likes the other one we never see him
drive.
"But then, look at him!
Who else but Tyler is going to have a ZR-1 for his regular every
day car?!"
His car is very impressive in
terms of torque and horsepower and all that. Everyone hanging around the
dyno was very pleased, and Tyler himself, at the wheel, was just like
Dean, his son (one of Paul's best friends). Very quiet, but with that smug
look.
I like to see people getting
a big kick out of whatever it is they like. NO, Corvettes are not my bag,
but I am glad to see people who do have Corvettes and restoration as their
bag getting all excited and pleased with themselves.
Isn't that what life is
about? Getting all excited about the things you love?
And I am misquoting but...
that's the difference. The difference between the men and the boys? The
price of their toys!
