IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS
As a research institute, NIMH is not able to monitor this web site for crisis messages
or make referrals. If you are considering suicide, don't stay by yourself. Help can be as
close as your family doctor, or the nearest emergency room (or dialing 911), where
thoughts and plans for suicide will be considered seriously, and you can be referred to a
mental health professional to help you through your crisis.
If you have a friend or family member who is suicidal, do not leave him or her alone.
Try to get him or her help immediately from an emergency room, physician, or mental health
professional. Do not disregard his or her statements about wishes to die. Even if you do
not believe your family member or friend will actually attempt suicide, they are clearly
in distress and can benefit from your help in receiving mental health treatment.
