Researchers hunt for genetic clues: Technology, in particular the ability to study the brain closely, is leading the way to the genetic understanding of ADD. New techniques give a three-dimensional look at the functioning of the brain - a far more detailed look than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans provide. The new technique, called SPECT for Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography, shows as holes the places where the brain is not functioning - the right prefrontal lobe, the basal ganglia and the like.  The research now is focused on genetic defects having to do with the brain chemical dopamine, a neurotransmitter that conveys messages from one nerve cell, or neuron, to another.
