Behavioral
Intervention Decreases Need For Medication In AD/HD Children
Various treatment interventions including stimulants
(methylphenidate (MPH): Ritalin) and parent training have proven
successful in achieving short-term reduction in the symptoms of
attention deficit/hyperactive disorder (AD/HD) in children. A new
study suggests that intensive behavioral therapy may result in lower
levels of medication being prescribed by physicians. -

AD/HD
A Major Factor In Tic Disorder Individuals with
Tourette syndrome (a severe form of tic disorder) who are referred
for clinical care also frequently suffer from attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). A new study suggests that
AD/HD may, in fact, account for much of the impairment seen in
patients with tic disorder. -

Attenade
Effective In the Treatment Of ADD And ADHD
Initial
results of two pivotal efficacy trials for Celgene Corp.’s
Attenade(TM) (d-methylphenidate), its chirally-pure version of
Ritalin(R) (dl-methylphenidate), for the treatment of attention
deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), show that Attenade is superior to placebo in controlling the
symptoms of the disorders. -Doctor's Guide 9/17
Researchers
hunt for genetic clues Technology, in particular the ability
to study the brain closely, is leading the way to the genetic
understanding of ADD. New techniques give a three-dimensional look
at the functioning of the brain - a far more detailed look than
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized axial tomography
(CAT) scans provide. The new technique, called SPECT for Single
Photon Emission Computer Tomography, shows as holes the places where
the brain is not functioning - the right prefrontal lobe, the basal
ganglia and the like.
The research now is focused on genetic defects having to do with the
brain chemical dopamine, a neurotransmitter that conveys messages from
one nerve cell, or neuron, to another. Parkinson's disease is another
disorder associated with dopamine problems. - Arizona Republic - 9/16
Mom's
crusade targets ADD "Right-brain approach allows boy to cope in
a confusing world
Freed's theory is that most
children with ADD or ADD-like symptoms have a different learning
style from that expected in the educational system. Their brains are
wired differently, especially because of cultural influences,
particularly the rapid-fire media. Music, computer games, remote
controls on television and hundreds of TV channels turn these
children into visual learners, Freed contends, who process
information with the right side of their brains instead of the
traditional, verbal-oriented left-brained system. Such kids didn't
need to be told how to do something, they needed to be shown. - The
