Younger Generation More Anxious

(August 21, 2006) -- A professor at New York's Columbia University has said modern teenagers and college students are more prone to anxiety and depression than earlier generations.

Suniya Luthar, a professor of psychology and education, said the urge to succeed has caused young people of all social classes to become more prone to anxiety and depression than their predecessors, USA Today reported Monday.

She said she does not agree with some observers who have said the problem stems from over-involved parents who protect their children from failure.

"Something else is going on that is really quite powerful," she said. "Much has to do with adolescents' internalized feelings of perfectionism and how much they want to accomplish. It is wrong to simply blame the parents."

A Kansas State University study published in 2003 supports Luthar's statements. It found that the number of college-age students treated for depression doubled from 1989 to 2001. The University of Michigan Depression Center recently estimated that up to 15 percent of college students are depressed.
