Depression and Substance Abuse Information ~ Treatment Information
The combination of mental illness and substance abuse is so common that many clinicians now expect to find it. Studies show that more than half of young persons with a substance abuse diagnosis also have a diagnosable mental illness.
Those who struggle both with serious mental illness and substance abuse face problems of enormous proportions. Mental health services are often not well prepared to deal with patients having both afflictions. Often only one of the two problems is identified. If both are recognized, the individual may bounce back and forth between services for mental illness and those for substance abuse, or they may be refused treatment by each of them.
Addiction professionals may believe that mental illness is a symptom of substance abuse; mental health professionals may believe that substance abuse is a symptom of mental illness. Therefore neither can provide effective treatment for dually diagnosed patients.
