Scene I: Outdoors with Mommy and Daddy and trusted adults gathered. Bear is in the foreground off to the side.
Bear: Once upon a time, a very special baby was born. In some places of the world, the moon glowed and stars sparkled. In other places, the sun shone and birds sang. In some places, the rain fell so flowers could grow. A rainbow came out to wrap the whole world in a hug and a little wind whistled throughout the land, "A wonderful baby has been born today!". Mom and Dad: We are happy our baby has been born.
Bear: The baby's parents were very happy, but they were not the only ones.
Grandma: I am so happy my grandbaby is here. I can't wait to play with and help care for this little baby.
Neighbor: I am so happy my newest neighbor is this little baby.
Teacher: I am so happy that one day this baby will be in my class.
Bear: I was also very happy because I belonged to this baby. I was very pleased to find out how smart this baby was. My baby knew that warm milk, clean clothes, soft blankets, and cuddling with loving grown-ups was very good.
CLASSROOM DISCUSSION - Pause videotape for discussion of question 1 & 2
Grandma: Well, that baby grew and grew. The baby knew that playing with toys, rolling, crawling, and climbing were very good.
Neighbor: It wasn't long before that beautiful baby became a Little Child.
PHYSICAL ABUSE - Pause videotape. Explain that sometimes we watch cartoons and see characters hitting each other. Some people think that is funny. Hitting is really not funny. When someone hits or hurts another person that is physical abuse.
Scene II: Sunshine's house comes up -- In the house, kitchen.
Sunshine: Mommy bought some animal cookies at the store today. They are so good. I think I'll have one. (Sunshine pulls a chair to the table and climbs up. Dad comes in and yells nonsense rage) "No, Daddy, No!"
Curtains close.
Scene III: In the house -- bedroom.
Sunshine: Daddy hit me so hard. My nose is bloody and my lip is puffy. I guess I was bad.
Bear: I am very sorry this happened to you. You are not bad. It is not your fault your Daddy hit you. He has a big problem. You are a little child. You need to be loved. Find a trusted adult and tell what happened so they can help you and help your dad with his problem.
Sunshine: Come on, Bear, let's go tell Grandma.
Bear: Sunshine told Grandma. She helped The Little Child feel better and she found some people to help Daddy learn that little children should not be hurt.
Front curtains close.
Scene IV: Back curtains closed. Neighbor is outside by his house.
Neighbor: Sunshine grew. I felt happy when I saw The Little Child run and jump and dance outside. But one day I did not see Sunshine.
NEGLECT - Pause videotape. Explain when a parent or responsible adult does not take care of a child it is called child neglect.
