Page 1 of 5 The me I can thus organize and discipline is no more than the me of which I am aware. And it is precisely the equation of my total self with this one small part of it which is the root cause of all sin.
H. A. Williams, quote in Walking on Water by Madeleine L'Engle
I am an Episcopalian and a feminist and I believe God is active in my life. I don't meet the same mix much. I don't feel like I can say something coherent about God's role in my process right now, so I will just give a couple of links and then tell you some stories of God in my process:
Links: Faith Resources for Abuse Survivors
- Fr. Mahoney, a Catholic priest, has a home page at Trauma and Chaplaincy .
- Mosaic Minds has a discussion board on spiritual issues at: .
- An interesting discussion by a survivor of why she cannot accept God can be found at: On Survivors and Faith .
- Howard W. Whittaker, an Episcopal priest who wrote a good book entitled A Pastoral Commentary on Dissociative Disorders, has a home page at: Clinical Pastoral Services .
- I had a good experience at a retreat for survivors called "Torn Colors and Threads of Grace: A Healing Retreat for Women" run by the Rev. Sarah M. Rieth, who is an Episcopal priest in Buffalo, NY. She runs these retreats once or twice a year.. You can get more information from Sarah Rieth at Healing Consultation Services, 96 Jewett Parkway, Buffalo NY 14214-2398 or telephone 716-832-6113.
Links: Supportive Organizations Not Focused Primarily on Abuse Issues
- Women's Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual does interesting work, particularly in developing new liturgical ideas, though they don't have much on the WATER Web Page yet.
- I've been to some wonderful women's retreats sponsored by Faith At Work. These events were first developed by Marjory Z. Bankson, author of a number of good books on women's experiences of faith.
- I had a very deep healing experience (told in the May 3, 1997 story) at a Labyrinth retreat/workshop. There is a particularly good introduction to the labyrinth at Valle Crucis Labyrinth Page. The central source of information on Labyrinths (including a locator to find the one nearest you) is the Grace Cathedral labyrinth page at: Veriditas.
- There is a fascinating web site with an interdenominational shrine where you can leave a candle and a short prayer at: the artwells oracula .
- For general Episcopal links see: The Episcopal Church.
My Stories:
June 23-24, 1996: An Inner Journey
Written June 26, 1996, about an important inner event that happened June 23-24. When I go into a trance sometimes the other voices inside me speak, and sometimes I go into a symbolic world, a little like a dream but I have more control and it feels realer. This was an experience in that symbolic world, which I call the inner landscape.
It started with a dream Sunday night (June 23).
----------Dream----------
I walked out into the ocean with some other people, using a primitive air-hose breathing device. We went down into a kind of huge attic, full of old furniture. I had the feeling that we had gone back into the past to the time of Jesus, and that we were about to find something tremendously important that we could bring back with us as proof. There were monkeys running around the attic. I was a little afraid of them, but the leader of our group reunited a mother and baby monkey and let them down through a hole in the floor to a lower level.
