Questions to ask BEFORE you decide on a therapist
- What are your areas of expertise?
- How often will we meet?
- What is my diagnosis?
- How long can I expect to be in treatment?
- How do I know if I'm making progress?
- Under what conditions do I need medication?
- How much do you charge? and what insurance do you accept?
Psychiatrist, M.D. -
A medically trained physician whose focus is to assess, diagnose and treat both the biological and psychosocial aspects of mental health conditions. This may involve prescribing medication.
Psychologist, L.P. -
Educated at the master's or doctorate level in psychology and licensed to assess, diagnose and treat individuals seeking therapy and provide psychological testing.
Social Worker, LICSW -
Also licensed to assess, diagnose and treat individuals seeking therapy. Their education is in social work rather than psychology with direct practice and study methods of assessment and therapy.
Substance Abuse Counselor, CCDC -
They assess, diagnose and treat individuals and families seeking substance abuse treatment in a variety of settings.
Certified Nurse Specialist, R.N. -
Has a Master's degree in nursing and is certified to assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Some CNS' have additional credentialing to prescribe medication.
Certified Psychiatric Nurse, R.N. -
Experience in providing therapy and medication management under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
