Older Women More Likely Than Men To Suffer Depression

(February 7, 2007) -- Houston (dbTechno) - Researchers have stated that it is more likely for older women to suffer from symptoms of depression, and for longer period of time, than older men.

Researchers have come out and revealed that depression hits only around 1 to 2% of the entire elderly population.

The cases that do take place though can be severe, as 20% of those cases require treatment for depression.

The study followed 754 men and women over the age of 70. They followed them for 18 months starting in 1998.

36% of the elderly people in the study were depressed at one occasion over the 18 months. Out of those 36%, about half were depressed over the course of follow-up appointments.

More women were in a state of depression than man at each appointment set up.

Though older women are more likely to suffer from depression, they are less likely than men to die from depression.
